Putting Joy Into Practice: Seven Ways to Lift Your Spirit from the Early Church

Putting Joy into Practice: Seven Ways to Lift Your Spirit from the Early Church is an invitation to a life of joy. Phoebe Farag Mikhail explains what joy is and how to experience it through seven spiritual practices that cultivate our inner lives and connect us to our communities.

These seven practices, which include giving thanks, hospitality, praise, and more, take us on a journey that leads to joy through the giving and receiving of sacrificial love. Phoebe Farag Mikhail describes her own experiences and struggles with joy and offers practical ways to implement these practices to increase joy in our own lives and in the lives of all those around us.

Putting Joy Into Practice: Seven Ways to Lift Your Spirit from the Early Church

In the book, Phoebe Farag Mikhail writes about how we can use seven spiritual practices to find joy, live in it, protect it, and share it with others. This is a great resource for orthodox men and women, but any Christian and a non-Christian alike can benefit from this book and may get many ideas and benefits from it.

The book – Putting Joy into Practice – is very easy to read and engaging, and the chapters, while thorough, are not terribly long, so you can read a chapter on even a short lunch break, or during your commute, or other times you may be a little crunched for time but want to read something beneficial and engaging. It is also a good choice for a book/study group.

For example, the author wrote an example of the Morning Prayer to use on days for when we may be having a rushed/tiresome day weary, or just don’t have the strength/energy to go through the more formal/lengthy version. For those not familiar, Orthodox Christians use a book of hours that contains readings/prayers to be read at certain times a day. The one that this example is based on is from the Coptic version, called the Agpeya. But again, you do NOT have to be orthodox to benefit from Putting Joy into Practice.

Phoebe also offers a chapter on Arrow Prayers, step six. These are very short prayers that you can memorize and say throughout the day. Such as the Jesus Prayer, for those familiar. The book listed several examples of arrow prayers.

There are different ways this book can be utilized. you may read a chapter, and then spends time putting that step into practice until you feel that it is natural now, and then moves on and reads the next chapter. The steps are really tools you can use. And working with these steps/tools really has helped many maintain joy on good days, as well as helping find it again somewhat on bad days.
