The Faith of Atheism | Introduction

“Science is the only reliable way to understand the natural world [but] is powerless to answer questions such as ‘what is the meaning of human existence.’ We need to bring all the power of both scientific and spiritual perspectives to bear on understanding what is both seen and unseen.” The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, Free Press 2006, Francis Collins, Page 6 | The Faith of Atheism

Atheists try to make sense of their existence, and the universe in which they live. This inevitably results in beliefs regarding the origin and purpose of life, of what explains the fine tuning of this universe, and what happens when we die and so on – all of this constitutes a worldview. This worldview is typically called naturalism, meaning no supernatural reality exists.

The Faith of Atheism | From Evolution to Life

Even if we assume that naturalistic causes alone could have created the universe, it would still follow that non-living material had to become living at some stage. George Bassilios | The Faith of Atheism

Let’s address the most basic of all questions: How did the universe and human life begin to exist? The atheist must hold to an incomprehensible improbability that human evolved in the way they believe it did. In a book called the ‘Anthropic Cosmological Principle’ two prominent scientists Barrow and Tippler lay out ten steps that human evolution would need to have gone through in order to bring about modern man as we know him.

But here is the central issue for atheistic evolution – each of these steps are so improbable that even before it could ever possibly occur our sun would have burnt out and ceased to exist, and in the process, it would obliterate our planet Earth.

Even if we assume that naturalistic causes alone could have created the universe, it would still follow that non-living material had to become living at some stage. This is also an unproven (and impossible) position that must be accepted when denying the existence of God.

“When confronted with the order and beauty of the universe and the strange coincidences of nature, it’s very tempting to take the leap of faith from science into religion. I am sure many physicists want to. I only wish they would admit it.” Tony Rothman concludes | The Faith of Atheism

The Faith of Atheism | From Randomness to Design

How can the atheist explain the intricate design with which this universe operates?

The world’s leading atheist Richard Dawkins gives a backhand compliment to the obvious design in nature. In an interview in the film ‘Expelled’ he says: “At some earlier time somewhere in the universe a civilization evolved by probably some kind of Darwinian means to a very, very high level of technology, and designed a form of life that they seeded on to, perhaps, this planet. Now, that is a possibility, and an intriguing possibility, and I suppose it’s possible that you might find evidence for that when you look at the detail, the details of biochemistry, molecular biology you might find a signature of some sort of designer.” [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1091617/characters/nm1468026]

John Lennox, Oxford mathematician and philosopher of science, observes: “We have only to see a few letters of the alphabet spelling our name in the sand to recognize at once the work of an intelligent agent. How much more likely, then is the existence of an intelligent Creator behind human DNA, the colossal biological database that contains no fewer than 3.5 billion ‘letters’ – the longest ‘word’ yet discovered?” [https://www.rzim.org/read/rzim-global/stephen-hawking-and-god]

The former world leading atheist philosopher Anthony Flew, himself, rejected his atheistic beliefs because of the incredible and undeniable design seen in biological systems, he says: “It now seems to me that the findings of more than fifty years of DNA research have provided materials for a new and enormously powerful argument to design.” [ https://www.ics.uci.edu/~asuncion/flew.htm]

The atheist, to maintain his atheism, has to posit a natural cause. But this would require too much faith to accept. As the physicist Tony Rothman concludes: “When confronted with the order and beauty of the universe and the strange coincidences of nature, it’s very tempting to take the leap of faith from science into religion. I am sure many physicists want to. I only wish they would admit it.” [Casti, J.L. 1989. Paradigms Lost. New York, Avon Books, p.482-483]

“Every age has its superstitions, and ours is the notion that science is an all-sufficient guide to truth.” Lewis Cassels said | The Faith of Atheism

The Faith of Atheism | Science is My Only Source of Truth

It is common for atheists to claim that science is the only gate to discovering truth. This is called scientism – the proposition that science can explain all aspects of reality.

World leading scientist Francis Collins critiques this view in his book ‘The Language of God’: “Science is the only reliable way to understand the natural world [but] is powerless to answer questions such as ‘what is the meaning of human existence.’ We need to bring all the power of both scientific and spiritual perspectives to bear on understanding what is both seen and unseen.” [The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, Free Press 2006, Francis Collins, Page 6]

Atheists are left with no other options but to posit a natural cause for everything, or that all truth and reality have a scientific explanation. But this requires blind faith on the part of atheists: As the journalist Lewis Cassels says: “Every age has its superstitions, and ours is the notion that science is an all-sufficient guide to truth.” [https://engagemagazine.net/starting-blog/worldview/god-and-science-require-faith/]
